Short Story - Shreya 9TL

Short Story - Question & Clarify

Neglect

Questions (wonderings)

Clarify (meanings)

The windscreen wipers worked furiously to clear the glass from the driving rain. It was no use, he still couldn’t see, so he pulled into a side street and waited for the pelting sheet to ease.

Flicking through the radio, a wavering squeal emerged, quickly changing into a fast beated pop song.  Jonesie, as he was called on the rank, shuffled lower into his seat and settled down to waited. Looking up to change the crackling station, he noticed a brown-coated figure huddling in the meagre shelter of a deserted warehouse. Jonesie studied the figure and decided, being a kind-hearted man, that he would try and do something to help.

As Jonesie neared, the brown-coated figure started to shift uneasily, looking up with fearful brown eyes.

“You look pretty cold out here, would you like to come and sit in my taxi till the rain eases off a bit?”, Jonesie asked sincerely.

After waiting a bit and receiving no reply, Jonesie headed back for the warmth of the taxi. When he neared the car, he noticed someone behind him and turning around saw that the brown-coated figure had followed him to the car.

“So you decided to come then, eh mate?”, Jonesie queried heavily, as he helped the figure into the passenger seat.  Closing the door, Jonesie thought about what might happen to this poor guy.

In the car, Jonesie changed the station yet again finding a country song he thoroughly enjoyed. After the song had finished, he flicked the radio off and turned to his bedraggled guest, noticing that his bones almost protruded through the coat.

“So, aye, where do you come from then mate?”, inquired Jonesie. “That’s if you don’t mind me asking?”

His only reply was the turning of the brown-coated figures head, to stare wonderingly out into the menacing dark sky.

Jonesie tried again, “Eh, um, what’s ya name then?”

The brown-coated figure turned his head in the direction of Jonesie and blinked his fearful brown eyes in reply.

Silence followed, Jonesie thinking of what he could do for his silent guest.

Jonesie flicked on the radio again, it crackled and hissed, and then resumed into some teenage trash.

“Come on mate, you must be starving. Lets take ya home and give ya some tucker”, Jonesie said.

The brown-coated figure did not move and his answer was only a deep sigh.

The rain had eased and as they drove, the road glistened like oil. Jonesie had finished his shift, so there were no problems. When they got inside his house, Jonesie helped the figure to dry himself, but he never took his coat off.  Jonesie thought this a bit odd but made no further inquiries.  He prepared a meal and the brown- coated figure warmed himself in front of the blazing fire.

Six months later, the brown-coated figure and Jonesie spend every night in the taxi, listening to the crackling radio and sharing long conversations with many pauses and deep sighs of reply.

The fearful brown eyes are fearful no more and the ragged, tatty coat has been replaced by a thick, warm one.

Jonesie and the brown-coated figure spend all their time together, after all, dogs are a mans best friend.

Stop Motion - Shreya Vanshali

What did you enjoy/dislike about the process?

I didn't enjoy because it wasn't my interest.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome these?

The only challenges we faced was the lighting and the camera moving and that made it not look smooth. We kept on retaking the parts until it looked better than before.

What would you change if you were to do it again?

I wouldn't wanna do it again but, I would use a different iPad or device to make the stop motion so it makes it easier to take the photos.

What other insights did you have while participating in Media studies this rotation.

I didn't get any insights throughout this rotation.

Question and clarify

Watch this introduction and video.

Every time I pause it, I will role-model what questions I have and how do I clarify my thinking.

We ask questions constantly and we make connections with what we already know, this is how the brain operates when it creates understanding when we read texts.

Our brains constantly question and clarify at light speed - this exercise will slow down the process, to make the skill clearer.

All About Me

All About Me
Shreya

My name is Shreya and it originated from India. My name means fortunate, beautiful, bold, and auspicious. In Hindi it means something else like a god in Hindu there are also other meanings to it. There is a famous singer who is very popular in India. Her name is Shreya Ghoshal. Sometimes when her name comes up they say “hey Shreya it’s you on TV.” I don’t
want to have another name that I would like to be called. I like being called by my first name which is Shreya. I think my grandma might have thought of my name because she had also thought of my brother's name which he has right now. My mum had a different name for him but it had been changed by my grandma. I don’t remember if my mum or grandma had named me. So I am not sure why they chose that name for me. I wouldn’t actually want to change my name to anything else. I like how my name is now. In New Zealand I haven’t met many people with the name Shreya so I find it unique here and, in Fiji and India it is a common name for girls to have.

This is my avatar. I used two  different sites to make two different avatars. I used these sites which were cartoonify and GetAvataars. I had taken a screen shot of them because it was easier to do. I didn’t really choose much of a background except for one which is kind of simple. I am going to choose the one to the right because I like that one more than the other one.

I have some books at home which are kind of old but I still read them sometimes. The places I read are sitting on my bed, on the couch, or by the table. I don’t have a favourite book or a favourite series but, I use to like reading goosebumps and I still do sometimes. Although I didn’t find reading too hard for me at the start. I don’t remember how many books I have read this year. If I gave advice to someone who can’t read well, I would say, just read everyday. I have not read any books in my language and I can not read in my own language.

I try to be positive when things are going wrong. My friends tell me not to feel down. I am patient and nice. If I miss out something if it is something I like then I may feel a bit down but, if it is something I don't like then I don’t mind. I’m not too good at sports, but I am a good listener.

The most important people to me are my family and all of my friends. My mum is very important and so is everyone else. My family and I live here in New Zealand but, some of my family also live in Fiji. I have one dog in Fiji. If something really bad happened to my family or friends I would be kind of devastated. So far nothing has happened which is good.

When the earthquake happened, my mum and I were at home and I think my brother was at home too.  We were inside of our house when the earthquake happened. Our house was not okay. My dad was at work when it happened. Me and my mum were sitting outside after it finished. It did break our house and we moved and now that house isn’t there anymore. I don’t remember what we did after the earthquake and once my dad was home but it was pretty bad.

The place I love to be is at home or with family/friends. I don’t often go to my friends house but sometimes we make plans and go to somebody's house. When I am with my family we either go to a restaurant or family around us meet up and we go to their house or we go somewhere. We don’t have a specific place we go to.

We don’t visit Fiji very often but we would go every 3 years. Now my mum said that we will go to other places. We do communicate with our family in Fiji over the phone and talk to them like that. They also sometimes come and visit us here in New Zealand. Most of the time they come for a job or something else.

I know what I want to do when I leave school.  I think this is because if I study hard enough then it could come true. I am choosing this path because I want to do something good in the world. Since I have just started high school I will have to wait 2-3 more years to get a job. Once I get a job then, I can start to save up money for my studies and university. I know someone that does law studies so I can ask that person to help me if they can with the law studies.

Challenge
This year I want to be organised and make sure that I complete my work on time.
Achieve
When I don’t understand something I will put my hand  up and ask for help.
Responsibility
I will do the right thing and not get in any trouble.
Empathy

Speak more. I am quiet and shy at school. Once I know people then I talk to them but, if someone talks to me first then I talk to them as well.
